Colleen Berwick’s Denim Redemption: Giving Old Denim New Life
Meet MBF Member, Colleen Berwick, the creative force behind Denim Redemption — a small business making a big statement about sustainability and style.
Every year, more than 2.16 million tonnes of denim are discarded around the world, and in Australia alone, over 300,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfill. Rather than see this as just a statistic, Colleen saw it as an opportunity.
Three years ago, she launched Denim Redemption (formerly Affinity Rose Designs) with a simple but powerful mission: to rescue unwanted denim and fabrics and transform them into one-of-a-kind handbags, totes, and pouches. Each piece is lovingly handcrafted from pre-loved jeans, skirts, and shorts — proving that sustainability and fashion can go hand in hand.
Colleen’s passion comes from a deep awareness of the environmental impact of fast fashion and textile waste. Through her work, she’s not just creating beautiful, functional bags, she’s sparking conversations about conscious consumption and inspiring others to rethink what “waste” really means.
💙 Denim Redemption’s mission:
Reduce textile waste by giving old clothes a new purpose.
Create stylish, durable, and eco-friendly accessories.
Raise awareness about the environmental footprint of fashion.

About Colleen Berwick
Even as a child Colleen was interested in sewing and knitting, undertaking classes in both.
As an adult, experiencing difficulty with buying clothes to fit, Colleen found a sewing class in Melbourne (where she was living at the time) and started her journey of pattern making and producing clothing to suit herself.
After moving to Port Macquarie, Colleen started a TAFE dress making course.
One of the study components was an environmental module. Here she learned about how fabrics and materials were developed and made and that there are a lot of chemicals and other processes involved in the construction of most fabrics, denim included. Similarly, during the decomposition process, textiles generate greenhouse methane gas and leach toxic chemicals and dyes into groundwater and soil.
Hence Colleen's desire that Denim Redemption creates environmentally responsible bespoke bags using all the technical pattern making and sewing skills she has amassed over the years.
